Please note that these classes will be held in-person. There are currently no plans to offer classes virtually online.

Please note the two points below prior to contacting the principal.

  1. As our curriculum is year-round, those who have participated semester 1 in the past are welcome and encouraged to sign up for semester 2.

  2. We have no plans to open registration for a new Beginner 1 class in the second semester so we are not accepting registrations for complete newcomers to studying Japan for the second semester. Thank you for your understanding.

Tuition Tax Credits

For income tax purposes, tuition tax credits may be claimed for OJLS adult classes from the 2015 calendar year onwards. OJLS has once again been certified under the Income Tax Act as an Educational Institution for a period of 5 years from 2020 to 2025, and the intent is to renew it for future years. The proof of certification is published on the ESDC federal government website: "OJLS Tuition Tax Credit".

Scholarship

Each year, the school offers one $300.00 scholarship to the student who successfully competes for it. The deadline for registration is on January 31 every year. For a complete list of rules and an application form, download the PDF document linked below. Printed copies are available at the school upon request.

OJLS Privacy Policy

  • What information does OJLS collect?
The information OJLS collects from staff and students is what has been provided in OJLS’ registration forms. This includes address, e-mail, and phone number.

  • What does OJLS use the information for?
The information collected is primarily used by teachers to communicate with their students and the students' parents or guardians. OJLS may also use it to send out announcements such as notices for registration dates or school closures in the event of heavy weather conditions.

  • Does OJLS disclose the information to external third parties?
No. OJLS does not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to external third parties information that will personally identify staff or students. OJLS will disclose the information to law enforcement personnel only if the Chairperson of Athe Board has reasonable and probable grounds to believe that it is in the public interest to do so and that the record reveals a grave environmental, health, or safety hazard to the public.

  • How does OJLS protect the information?
OJLS takes all private information very seriously and has measures to ensure that only those individuals with a need-to-know will have access to information that will personally identify staff or students.

  • How can a staff or student get a copy of the information OJLS has on record about them?
Contact a member of the Board through the OJLS website or in person by visiting the office during school hours and the staff will arrange to provide staff or students with a physical copy of the record of privacy information about them as soon as possible.

  • When does OJLS destroy the information?
OJLS will destroy the information three school years after the time a staff member has left OJLS or a parent, guardian or student has submitted a registration form.

Cancellation Policy

A $30 cancellation charge will apply if the student withdraws their registration before the end of September or February depending on the term in which they are registered. After this has passed, no refunds will be given. Family or full-year discounts may not be honored during a refund if the cancellation changes the terms under which they were given. If you would like to cancel your enrolment with the Ottawa Japanese Language School, please download the PDF form below. After completing and signing it, please scan the document and email your cancellation request with the scanned document attached to treasurer@ojls.ca.

Annual Audit Petition

Every adult student or parent/guardian of a student is a member of the non-profit corporation that is “The Ottawa Japanese Language School”. OJLS and other Not-For-Profit corporations are required by the Ontario Corporations Act to do 1 of 2 things every year in regards to our financial records: 1. Hire a Certified Professional Accountant to perform a formal Audit of the school financial records. 2. Or, as per Sections 96.1 and 133, because OJLS is not a public corporation and our annual income is less than $100,000, we may choose to not have a formal Audit if our members give their permission in writing or through an online checkbox if it's through online registration.

Compilation Engagement

If our members agree to waive the formal Audit requirement, OJLS is still required by law to have a type of financial review, called a “Compilation Engagement”, performed every year by an independent person not affliliated with OJLS. The reviewer may not be an Accountant, but candidates selected by the OJLS Board of Directors will be required to possess related financial experience. The “Compilation Engagement” process is much less expensive than hiring an Accountant to do a formal Audit and provides some of the same benefits, such as ensuring the accuracy of the financial records. Please contact a Board Member if you have any questions about the review of financial records.
